World Day of Prayer

The World Day of Prayer is a world-wide ecumenical Christian movement which began over 100 years ago. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common Day of Worship, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year.

Money collected goes to Christian charities for projects all over the world (such as agriculture initiatives in Bangladesh and South Sudan, wheelchairs to Zambia, helping marginalised women in London, encouraging action on climate change).

Services are organised by women from a different country each year. They are held on the same day all over the world - usually the first Friday in March.

As we participate in the UK, we will be part of this great wave of prayer encircling the globe - starting as the sun rises over Samoa and ending about 38 hours later back in the Pacific, as the sun sets over American Samoa. We will be sharing our service with people in over 120 countries and islands around the world.

The service this year has been prepared by women in Slovenia. The theme is a call to come to God's table. Voices and stories of wives, mothers and grandmothers, Roma people, refugees and migrant workers are heard.

In Alderley Edge the churches come together to organise one service, and take turns to host. This year the service is being held at St Pius Church at 14:00 on Friday 1st March.

All are Welcome!
