Dear Friends May 2012
An Appeal for St Philip and St James’ Parish Church, Alderley Edge
Essential Maintenance required to Spire, Organ and Interior
Target £150,000
Please help! Gift Afternoon Sunday 15th July 2012
St Philip and St James’ Church welcomes all for Christian worship both at the regular services and also for those important personal and family orientated times of weddings, baptism, confirmation and funerals.
Our much loved parish church was built in 1853 whilst the spire and south aisle were added just a few years later. It has been awarded Grade 2 * status and like all churches is inspected at least every five years.
Much of the general running cost is paid for by the regular congregation through free will giving schemes but from time to time the maintenance requirements exceed that which can be found by these measures and so we are mounting an appeal to all who care about the church.
The last quinquennial inspection found that parts of the Victorian iron framework in the spire had corroded causing damage to the stonework. The affected metal and damaged stone require replacing. You can imagine this is a complex matter requiring careful architectural and structural planning.
Music is an important part of worship and the church’s organ is often the crucial instrument. The organ now needs a thorough overhaul in addition to some safety requirements.
The interior of the church requires repairs to the plaster and redecoration. The vestry needs improved storage for vestments, printed music and our lovely altar cloths many of which are very special and date back over the life of the church.
On Sunday July 15th 2012 we are launching fundraising with a dedicated Gift Afternoon commencing at 2 pm. The Ministry team and the Churchwardens will be in church and will be pleased to explain the requirements and to receive donations. Evensong will follow at 6.30 pm.
Please do join us. Please do give generously. These repairs will not be achieved without widespread help from all those who live in Alderley Edge and who care about St Philip and St James’ Church. We thank you for your kind generosity and for your support for the Lord’s work here.
Please give generously and sign or delete the gift aid form below as appropriate for your wishes and financial situation. Gift Aid will substantially increase your donation.
With grateful thanks
Revd Jane Parry, Vicar
Sue Mackman and Bob Tuffin, Churchwardens
