We will remember them…
August 4th, 1914 – Britain declares war on Germany
On 9th August the British Expeditionary Force began embarking for Belgium. At Mons on 23rd August the BEF held off a superior German force, but then had to retreat in parallel with the French.
In Alderley Edge, as in every town and village in the country, men volunteered for the forces. It is not know whether any men from Alderley Edge were among the early recruits to Kitchener’s New Army, but in 1919 the Vicar estimated that over 400 men from the district had served in the forces during the course of the war.
The War Memorial.
71 men who paid the ultimate price are listed.
